The Blue Jays may have just selected their next ace.
On Sunday evening, the Blue Jays picked with the 20th overall pick for the second consecutive draft. For the second straight season, they selected the prospect that ranked 11th overall by MLB Pipeline. This year, they selected Trey Yesavage.
Standing at 6’4”, 225 lbs, the 20-year-old right-handed pitcher pitched for East Carolina during his collegiate career. After pitching in relief during his freshman season, he moved to the rotation in 2023 and posted a 2.61 ERAΒ  in 76 innings pitched, along with a 33.9 K% and a 7.4 BB%. Yesavage was even better in 2024, posting a 2.03 ERA in 93.1 innings pitched, along with a 8.9 BB% and a 40.4 K%.
As for his stuff, well, his stuff is very good. Yesavage’s fastball sits 93-95 mph and has topped out at 98 mph. While it doesn’t have a ton of life, there’s a lot of carry on the pitch which is helped by a high arm slot, according to MLB Pipeline.
His slider and splitter are equally good. MLB Pipeline notes that his slider/cutter is his best pitch that has a lot of depth. The splitter gets swings and misses, as does his spike curveball. In reality, all four pitches are already average or plus, and the command is already pretty good. The Blue Jays picked one of the most MLB-ready prospects in the draft, not too shabby for the 20th-overall pick.
Toronto will pick once more on Sunday with the 59th-overall pick, before picking an additional 19 times between Monday and Tuesday. The team has a signing bonus pool of $8,987,000 with this pick’s slot value being $4.07 million. Players drafted rounds 11 through 20 can be signed up to $150,000 before they start to eat into the bonus pool.
It’ll be interesting to see who else the Blue Jays pick, as this draft will determine how quick this rebuild/retool is.
