The Toronto Blue Jays are finding ways to win series.
After a nine-game road trip, they returned home to host the Atlanta Braves for a three-game series that spanned from Monday to Wednesday. Game one didn’t end well for the Jays, as starter Easton Lucas allowed three home runs and eight earned runs in an 8-4 loss. It was a good comeback attempt, as the Jays scored four runs from the bottom of the sixth onward, but it wasn’t enough.
They had a much better second game to split the series at one apiece. For the first time all season, the Blue Jays had a multi-home run game as Alan Roden and Anthony Santander each hit a long ball. Kevin Gausman pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs (both solo home runs) to bring his season ERA to 2.49.
The rubber match was played on Wednesday, with the Jays taking it 3-1. Chris Bassitt pitched five scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, as the team finished with a franchise-best 19 strikeouts in a nine-inning game. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also hit his first home run of the season in this one, while Bo Bichette hit two doubles.
Unlike the series against the Baltimore Orioles over the past weekend, the bats weren’t as dominant. Santander led the team with a 252 wRC+, and Roden wasn’t far behind with his 250 wRC+. Both Myles Straw and Tyler Heineman continued to perform well, Straw receiving regular playing time while Heineman only had three plate appearances.
The two other players with a wRC+ above 100 were Guerrero Jr., who had a 183 wRC+, and Bichette, who had a 111 wRC+. Andrés Giménez had a rough series as he’s cooled off considerably since his hot start. Addison Barger made his season debut this season, posting a -100 wRC+ in seven plate appearances. Alejandro Kirk, Ernie Clement, and Will Wagner each had a wRC+ below 10, they need to start producing soon.
Relievers were good in this series, pitching 11 innings with a 1.64 ERA and a 4.09 FIP. Only two earned runs were given up, one by Chad Green and one by Jeff Hoffman, it didn’t really matter though as the Jays won both those games. Yimi García had a good outing, striking out all four batters he faced.
Next up for the Jays is a three-game series at home against the Seattle Mariners. They sit second in the American League East with an 11-8 record.
