Toronto Blue Jays top position player prospect Arjun Nimmala was promoted from High-A Vancouver to Double-A New Hampshire last weekend, and the infielder made his debut with his new club yesterday against the Portland Sea Dogs.
Slotted into the second spot in the lineup and manning shortstop, Nimmala collected one hit in his debut while striking out three times against the Sea Dogs.
Facing Red Sox prospect Gage Ziehl, a 22-year-old right-hander who ranks at #21 on the organization’s top prospect board, Nimmala went down looking on four pitches in his first at-bat against the Sea Dogs starter. His second at-bat in the fourth inning went similarly to his first at-bat, although this time he went down swinging on three pitches. Ziehl was attacking Nimmala low in the zone right from the get-go, and the Jays prospect wasn’t finding success at the plate.
The top of the fifth is when Nimmala got the better of Ziehl. After taking a ball inside, Ziehl tried to sneak another pitch inside, and Nimmala was able to get the barrel to the bat and send a line drive to the opposite field. Not only was it his first hit in Double-A, but he also moved the runner to second on the play before being stranded with the bases loaded.
Nimmala’s day would end with another K in the top of the seventh, and the Fisher Cats eventually won the game thanks to a solo home run from Aaron Parker in the top of the ninth inning to make it 3-2.
On the field, Nimmala was perfect. On four chances, Nimmala converted three assists with one putout.
It was a tough day for the 20-year-old at the plate, who is getting a new opportunity in a league where the average age is +3.8 years on the Jays prospect. Nimmala will likely finish the year, barring a scorching run in the Eastern League this summer, as the infielder continues to develop on the diamond.
