The Toronto Blue Jays have made a trade.
On Tuesday afternoon, the team announced that they’ve traded the recently DFA’ed Nick Robertson to the Houston Astros in exchange for pitching prospect Edinson Batista.
Batista was signed by the Astros back in the 2019 international free agency period, with the Dominican right-handed pitcher making his debut the same season. That year saw him post a 4 ERA and a 3.52 FIP in 36 innings pitched with a 26.3 K% and a 14.4 BB%.
In 2021, Batista split his time between the Arizona Complex League and Single-A, posting a 7.46 ERA and a 4.77 FIP in 25.1 innings pitched. The following season saw Batista post a  2.67 ERA and a 3.71 FIP in 107.2 innings pitched split between Single-A and High-A.
The High-A level is as high as Batista has reached in his career, and in 2023, he pitched in just 11 games, where he had a 10.13 ERA and a 7.75 FIP in 29.1 innings. Last season, the 22-year-old pitched in High-A last season, where he had a 5.01 ERA and a 5.68 FIP in 115 innings pitched with a 20.6 K% and a 10.8 BB%.
Standing at 6’2”, 210 lbs, Batista was ranked as the Astros’ 24th best prospect in their mid-season update in 2022. His best graded pitch was his slider, while he also features a low-90s fastball, a curveball, and a changeup.
The Astros’ usage for Batista is similar to what the Blue Jays do for quite a few of their pitching prospect, giving him 16 starts in 26 appearances in 2024.
As for Robertson, the Blue Jays claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels in 2024. He pitched an inning for the Jays in their final series of the season and also pitched in two games for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
This isn’t close to the biggest trade the reliever has been involved in. Before the 2023 trade deadline, Robertson was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Boston Red Sox for Enrique Hernández. In the 2023-24 off-season, the Red Sox traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals for Tyler O’Neill.
