The New York Mets are heading North of the border next week, and a former Blue Jay will likely not be making the trek.
The Mets will be in Toronto for three games starting on Monday, and infielder Marcus Semien will be missing out on the action after landing on the IL with a hip flexor strain yesterday. Semien was traded to the East Coast squad this past winter, with the Mets sending Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange, who ironically, the Jays are facing right now.
Across 80 games and 290 at-bats, Semien is struggling to live up to the multi-year deal he signed with Texas during the 2021/2022 offseason. The right-handed bat owns a .214/.271/.341 slash line with eight doubles, nine home runs, and 29 RBIs with a .613 OPS, which is currently on track to be his lowest total since becoming a big leaguer in 2013. He owns a -0.6 bWAR for his efforts, and overall, the Mets have struggled to find any footing in the NL East with their 34-47 record.
While Jays fans will miss Semien next week, another familiar face will be in the visitors’ dugout for the first time at the Rogers Centre.
Bo Bichette will be at the Rogers Centre for the first time since signing his three-year deal with the Mets this past winter. Bichette, a former second-round pick of the Jays in 2016, spent seven years with Toronto before landing in New York on his $42 million AAV deal.
After a slow start to the season, Bichette is starting to find some footing in Queens. Through his last 15 games, he has 22 hits (.355 average) with five home runs, 13 RBIs, a .379 OBP and a .661 SLG. On the season, Bichette owns a .254/.299/.388 slash line with a .688 OPS, 93 wRC+, and a 91 OPS+. He also leads the NL with his 327 at-bats.
Amongst the other Mets superstars, the Jays will see Francisco Lindor, who returns to the active roster after landing on the IL on April 23rd with a calf strain. Juan Soto was also a potential IL candidate after dealing with a back issue, but he suited up in yesterday’s game, so unless something turns for the worse over the next couple of days, he will be making the trek to the Rogers Centre.
The Jays will also miss Clay Holmes, Tylor Megill, Jorge Polanco, and Luis Robert Jr., who are all currently on the IL, as well as Canadian Jonah Tong, who is back in Triple-A.
