In less than 10 days, the 2025 World Series champion will be crowned.
On Friday morning, the Toronto Blue Jays released their 26-man roster for the World Series. It’s the same as their American League Championship except for two changes: Yariel Rodríguez and Joey Loperfido were removed from the roster, while the Blue Jays have added Ty France and Bo Bichette.
The big news here is that the Blue Jays are getting back their superstar shortstop, albeit he may play as a designated hitter or even as a second baseman. This season, Bichette slashed .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs in 629 plate appearances for a career-best 134 wRC+.
Bichette hasn’t played since September 6, as he injured his knee sliding into Austin Wells at home base in a game against the New York Yankees.
Getting Bichette back in the lineup makes the Blue Jays’ order that much more dangerous, especially if he can hit like he did before the injury. The 27-year-old would slot in nicely behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the cleanup spot.
Ty France’s inclusion is a bit interesting. I don’t think anyone was expecting that. Acquired before the trade deadline, France slashed .277/.320/.372 with a home run in 103 plate appearances with the Jays, giving him a 92 wRC+.
It’s worth noting that the Blue Jays got him to pinch hit against left-handed pitching, and the Dodgers have a whole lot of left-handed relievers. Anthony Banda, Jack Dreyer, Justin Wrobleski, and Clayton Kershaw all pitched out of the bullpen for the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
After his regular season, it was impossible to envision Rodríguez off the roster. However, he’s had a rough postseason, giving up three earned runs in just two and two-thirds innings in four outings. The Jays run some risk dropping to 12 pitchers, but getting Bichette back is more than worth it.
Loperfido made the roster when he replaced Anthony Santander after he was removed from the ALCS roster. Loperfido’s lone action was in Game 5 of the ALCS, replacing George Springer after he was hit in the knee. The outfielder received just one plate appearance.
Game 1 starts at 8:00 PM ET on Friday.
