The prospect we’ll look at in this article was one of a handful of Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospects who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
The 48th-best prospect in the Blue Jays’ system in the mid-season update is Chad Green. Let’s get to know him! If you missed the last article, Jackson Hornung ranked as our 49th-best prospect in the mid-season update.
Getting to know Chad Dallas…
Position: Starting pitcher
Throws: Right
Born: June 26, 2000
Acquired: Fourth round, 2021 draft
Previous ranking: 20th (2024 mid-season)
To say that Chad Dallas has had an up-and-down career would be an understatement. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 draft, Dallas’ first professional season didn’t go great, posting a 4.60 ERA and 5.50 FIP in 88 innings pitched, all with the High-A Vancouver Canadians.
Dallas’ 2023 season, as of now, is the high point of his career. Starting the year with the Canadians, he posted a 2.03 ERA and 2.88 FIP in 26.2 innings pitched, with a 36.3 K% and 11.8 BB%. After his promotion to Double-A New Hampshire, Dallas had a 4.10 ERA and 4.41 FIP in 96.2 innings pitched, with a 25.8 K% and 9.5 BB%. His total of 123.1 innings was the most in the Jays’ minor league system.
Unfortunately, Dallas missed a portion of the 2024 season at its start, and his season ended prematurely when he required Tommy John surgery in September. When healthy, Dallas had a 6.34 ERA and 5.54 FIP in 61 innings pitched with the Buffalo Bisons.
According to Prospects Savant, Dallas has a five-pitch mix: a cutter, a four-seamer, a slider, a curveball, and a changeup. The fastball averaged 92.2 mph in 2024. Dallas’ best pitch by far is his slider, while his fastball and cutter both ranked as average in his most recent MLB Pipeline profile back in 2024.
Dallas will likely return to action at some point in 2026, as the recovery time for Tommy John surgery typically ranges from 12 to 14 months. It may be a make-or-break season for the right-handed pitcher, as a good season would put him in the conversation for a call-up.
