Another former Toronto Blue Jay has found a new home.
Dominican infielder Santiago Espinal reportedly agreed to a minor-league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya. The deal also includes an invitation to spring training as a non-roster invitee.
Espinal’s arrival comes just as the Dodgers announced that fellow infielder Tommy Edman will begin this season on the injured list as he recovers from ankle surgery. Thus, the 31-year-old will enter big-league camp with a chance to earn second base reps with the two-time reigning World Series champions.
Prior to signing with the Dodgers, Espinal had spent the last two seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, hitting just .245/.294/.322 with nine home runs, 61 RBIs and a 68 wRC+ (100 league average) across 232 combined games from 2024-25. Before that, of course, the right-handed-hitting infielder played four seasons with the Blue Jays (2020-23) after arriving in the 2018 Steve Pearce trade from the Boston Red Sox.
Espinal enjoyed a breakout ’21 campaign, courtesy of his impressive .311/.376/.405 slash line and 115 wRC+ — all career-highs — in 92 contests with Toronto. He followed that up by emerging as an everyday player the following season, accounting for a 2.4 fWAR — the highest rating of his career.
It’s been a rough couple of seasons for Espinal at the plate, though he may still be a serviceable option versus left-handed pitching, thanks to his career .344 on-base percentage and .327 weighted on-base average in those matchups.
Without Edman, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said it’ll likely be an open competition at second base this spring, featuring Espinal, as well as Hyeseong Kim, Miguel Rojas and Alex Freeland.
