According to Fox 4, former big league reliever Matt Bush was arrested in Arlington, Texas on Friday night after causing an accident at an intersection where he blew through a red light and crashed into a truck. Police had attempted to pull Bush over just minutes before the incident after they found him driving erratically on Pioneer Parkway. Bush was able to evade police from being pulled over before the incident and bystanders at the scene had to detain the California product from running away from the accident. The former Rangers pitcher refused a sobriety test from police and eventually had his blood sampled. Bush was charged with DWI.
Bush has a troubled history dating back to his early draft years after being selected first overall in the 2004 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, with multiple arrests and fights leading to the Padres eventually DFA’ing him in 2009.
In 2012 while with the Tampa Bay Rays, the reliever was charged with two counts of DUI with property damage, one count of DUI with serious bodily harm, and multiple other charges after hitting and running over a motorcyclist on U.S. Route 41 in Port Charlotte, Florida. Bush was arrested with a blood alcohol content level of .18 and was eventually sentenced to 51 months in prison after taking a plea bargain. He served 39 months of that sentence before being released in 2015.
Early in his career, Bush started as an infielder before being converted to a pitcher in 2007. The Padres designated him for assignment to make room for Cliff Floyd before Spring Training of the 2009 season and he was eventually traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. The tenure was short-lived, as the Jays cut Bush on March 31 after he reportedly threw a baseball at a woman’s head at a party the day before, violating team rules.
Following his prison sentence, Bush signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers and made his MLB debut on May 13, 2016. He earned his first big league win a couple of days later during the famed Odor/Bautista bench-clearing brawl.
Through parts of six seasons in the Majors, Bush owns a 3.75 ERA across 211 innings split between the Rangers and the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers DFA’d Bush on July 1, 2023, and he re-signed a minor league deal with the Rangers for a second time but did not appear in the Majors again. He was a free agent at the time of his arrest.
Luckily nobody was hurt in this second instance of Bush’s poor decisions behind the wheel.
