A former Blue Jays reliever is staying in the NL East.
Veteran left-hander Tim Mayza is staying with the Philadelphia Phillies, signing a minor league deal as reported by Matt Gelb of The Athletic. He earned a non-roster invite to big league spring training as well.
Last season, Mayza split the campaign between the Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates, starting the year with the Bucs before being placed on waivers right at the deadline. The Phillies picked him up shortly after, and he made eight appearances down the stretch for his new club. With Pittsburgh, Mayza made just seven appearances due to injury, posting a 2.89 ERA and a 3.46 FIP across 9 1/3 innings.
An eight-year big league veteran, Mayza spent most of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he spent parts of seven seasons. Across 283 2/3 innings, he pitched to a 3.87 ERA, 1.290 WHIP, and a 9.3 K/9 and primarily worked well against left-handed bats, limiting them to a .214/.266/.304 slash line across 556 at-bats.
At one time, he was the longest tenured Blue Jay on the roster back in 2024, and after a slow start to the season, the Jays designated him for assignment in late June, and he would eventually finish the year with the Yankees organization on a MiLB deal, making 15 relief outings for the Bronx Bombers.
Primarily a two-pitch reliever, Mayza uses his sinker 68.4% of the time while also tossing a slider 29.9%. Baseball Savant also has five four-seam fastballs in there, which are likely just sinkers misclassified. Both his sinker and slider amassed zeros in terms of pitching run value.
With the Phillies, Mayza does have a route to the big leagues with some openings in their bullpen heading into the new campaign. He joins former teammate and Canadian Zach Pop as a new name in the bullpen, also looking for a spot in the big league spring training this year.
