Baseball is back.
And so is a former Toronto Blue Jay, as Bo Bichette made his New York Mets debut on Thursday afternoon. It didn’t go so great for the infielder.
Before the Mets even had a chance to bat, Brandon Lowe hit a two-run home run to put the Pittsburgh Pirates up two. The Mets got those two runs back and more, as Francisco Lindor led off the inning with a walk, followed by a Juan Soto single. Up stepped Bichette, hitting a sacrifice fly for his first RBI as a Met.
That’s about as good as it got for the former Blue Jay. The Mets batted around, but the Pirates eventually got the three outs to end the inning. Bichette was due up second in the bottom of the second, and he struck out swinging.
With the Mets up just 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Lindor and Soto both walked to start the inning, giving Bichette a second chance to drive in a run. This time, he was unable to do so as he struck out on three pitches.
Moving to the bottom of the fifth with the Mets up 7-4, they had the bases loaded to bring up Bichette. He also struck out in this plate appearance, but fouled off nine pitches before succumbing to an 88.3 mph slider. It was his best plate appearance of the game, as the Mets added two more runs for a 9-4 lead.
Bichette’s final plate appearance of the game led off the bottom of the seventh, as he was first pitch swinging and flew out to Bryan Reynolds. The former Blue Jay was just one of two players on the Mets who failed to register a hit in this game, but the other player, Lindor, drew three walks.
In fact, the two teams combined for 21 hits in this game, with just four players failing to get a hit. On the Pirates side of things, Spencer Horwitz was 0-4 with a strikeout, while Marcell Ozuna went 0-4 with a strikeout as well. The other former Blue Jay in this game, Marcus Semien, went 2-5 with a strikeout in his first game as Met.
This game was also Bichette’s big league debut at third base, where he was fine. We’ll see how he does for the remainder of the season.
