A former notable prospect of the Toronto Blue Jays has found a new home.
On Friday evening, Baseball America’s transaction log noted that the Milwaukee Brewers have signed outfielder Dasan Brown. The Canadian native was once a highly regarded prospect in the Blue Jays system.
In the summer of 2019, the Blue Jays selected the Oakville, Ontario native out of Abbey Park High School in the third round, as he was the first Canadian to go off the board at that year’s draft. Brown had a strong abbreviated debut, slashing .222/.444/.356 in the 14 games he played after the draft.
Like all minor leaguers, Brown didn’t play in the minor leagues in 2020, because there were no minor leagues. When MiLB returned in 2021, he was placed at the Single-A level, where he slashed .212/.310/.323 with four home runs in 226 plate appearances, with an 8.8 BB% and 32.7 K%.
Brown had a strong 2022 season. Beginning in Single-A, he slashed .279/.369/.450 with four home runs in 162 plate appearances for a 135 wRC+. He didn’t slow down upon a promotion to High-A, as he slashed .298/.392/.411 with two home runs in 176 plate appearances with the Vancouver Canadians, giving him a 134 wRC+. All told, he finished the 2022 season with a 133 wRC+, but a high K5 of 28.3%.
There was optimism for Brown’s 2023 season given what he did the year before, but he struggled in his first full season at the High-A level. In 463 plate appearances, the Oakville native slashed .218/.309/.315 with seven home runs, while his K% dropped to 25.1%. Still, that was only good enough for a 78 wRC+.
Maybe Brown just performs better in even-numbered years, as he slashed .257/.363/.411 with eight home runs in 329 High-A plate appearances to begin the High-A season, good for a 125 wRC+. In that span, he also had an 11.9 BB% and 24 K%, but Brown struggled upon his first foray into the upper-minors, posting a 72 wRC+ in 119 plate appearances with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
That leaves us with Brown’s 2025 season, which didn’t go all too well. The outfielder began the year with the Fisher Cats, slashing just .175/.286/.249 with three home runs in 276 plate appearances, as his K% jumped above 30% once again. Out of nowhere, Brown was promoted to Triple-A toward the end of the season, but didn’t do much better in his 15 games with the Buffalo Bisons, receiving just 15 plate appearances. That said, he did hit a home run.
Brown wasn’t the only notable prospect to enter free agency. Gabriel Martínez was once a top 10 Blue Jays prospect, but he, Alex De Jesus, Eddinson Paulino, Andrew Bash, and Phil Clarke all remain as free agents.
It’s not impossible to see a pathway to the big leagues for Brown, given that he has terrific speed and is a good defensive outfielder. He has shown glimpses of success with the bat, but was never able to figure it out in the Blue Jays’ system.
