The Toronto Blue Jays have added a fresh arm down in the bullpen ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Oakland Athletics.
Prior to first pitch, the club announced that left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera had returned from the paternity list following the birth of his third child. The 27-year-old southpaw left the team before Thursday’s series finale versus the Baltimore Orioles.
To make room for Cabrera, right-hander Yerry Rodríguez has been optioned to triple-A Buffalo.
Rodríguez, acquired from the Texas Rangers earlier this season, owns a 15.43 ERA and 8.53 FIP with five strikeouts in four relief appearances with the Blue Jays.
Cabrera has pitched to a 3.50 ERA and 5.16 FIP across 46.1 innings over 50 relief outings in 2024, punching out 18 per cent of his batters faced. He has walked 11.2 per cent of the opponents he’s faced, producing the highest clip of his career since 2021 (12.2 per cent).
The former St. Louis Cardinal has seen his role inside the Blue Jays’ bullpen increase considerably this season, especially following the departure of fellow lefty Tim Mayza. However, neutralizing left-handed batters has been somewhat of a concern, as they’ve slugged .493 against him and are responsible for five of his seven total home runs surrendered.
Last season, Cabrera — a free agent after 2025 — finished with a 2.66 ERA and 3.68 FIP while posting a 20.8-per-cent strikeout rate across 29 relief appearances after arriving from St. Louis.
The Blue Jays are seeking their second consecutive series victory with a win over the A’s in Sunday’s finale.
