The Toronto Blue Jays are back in the win column.
On Friday evening, they defeated the Detroit Tigers 10-7 to move to 4-2 this Spring Training, ending a two-game losing streak in the process.
They got off to a great start in the first inning, as Daulton Varsho hit his first home run of Spring Training in his first plate appearance. That was followed up by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s first home run of Spring Training, giving the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Tigers tied the game up at two but that didn’t last long. The bottom of the fourth was the Blue Jays big inning, as they strung together a bunch of hits for an eight spot, capped off by a George Springer double to make it a 10-2 game.
The bats are HOT 🔥 That's an EIGHT-run inning!
The Tigers made it hairy in their next half inning, with Justyn-Henry Malloy driving in two runs with a single and Dillion Dingler driving in two with a double to make it 10-6. Patrick Lee hit a triple in the top of the eighth to score another Tigers run, giving us the final score of 10-7.
Takeaways…
In total, the Blue Jays had two hits. Daulton Varsho’s home run was the third Blue Jays home run of Spring Training and was immediately followed by Guerrero Jr.’s. It’s a good sign for Varsho after having shoulder surgery in September.
Speaking of Guerrero Jr., he had a great game as on top of the home run, he had two infield singles in the bottom of the fourth. His first single in the fourth inning was a lead-off single which started the massive inning for the team. There wasn’t a whole lot of stringing hits together last season, so this is a good sign.
Other players with a hit were Andrés Giménez, Ernie Clement, Myles Straw, Nathan Lukes, and George Springer, the latter two hit doubles.
In regards to pitching, Chris Bassitt made his Spring Training debut, striking out four while allowing a hit in two and two-thirds innings. Yariel Rodríguez gave up four earned runs, while Ryan Boyer gave up two. Jeff Hoffman made his Blue Jays debut, striking out a batter in his inning of work and Anders Tolhurst picked up the save with a line of 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER 0 BB, 6 K.

The Blue Jays are back in action on Friday evening, as their “B” team heads to George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Bay to face the Yankees. That game starts at 6:35 PM ET and Arjun Nimmala will make his Spring Training debut in the game.
