Friday evening’s Toronto Blue Jays game went slightly worse than the afternoon game.
On Friday evening, the Blue Jays played their second of two games, falling 6-3 to the New York Yankees to bring their Spring Training record to 4-3.
The Blue Jays started on the wrong foot in this one, as in the bottom of the first, Austin Wells hit a home run on the second pitch he saw from Jake Bloss. Two batters later, Cody Bellinger also hit a home run to extend the Yankees’ lead to two.
In the top of the third, Will Wagner’s double cut the lead in half as Joey Loperifod scored. However, the Blue Jays gave up the third home run of the game, this time to Alex Jackson, before the rails came off in the bottom of the sixth.
Will Wagner's RBI double from this evening. Lead-off hitter, please.
Toronto showed some fight in the top of the eights, as Devonte Brown scored out to score Riley Tirotta and Matt Whatley hit a two-out single to score Adrian Pinto, but the Blue Jays fell short and lost 6-3.
Takeaways…
Top Blue Jays prospect Arjun Nimmala made his 2025 Spring Training debut in this game. Unfortunately, unlike last season, he didn’t hit as he went 1-3 with a strikeout. His hit was a double, while he struck out in three pitches against Gerrit Cole.
Arjun Nimmala's double from today. Gerrit Cole unfortunately doesn't give commentary.
Nimmala wasn’t the only Blue Jays batter with a double, as Joey Loperfido hit his second double of Spring Training and Will Wagner hit a double to drive in a run. Wagner also had a single, as did Matt Whatley and RJ Schreck.
Jake Bloss struggled in this game, finishing with a line of 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K with two home runs given up. The good news is that the 23-year-old had the highest fastball velocity in this game at 96.6 mph, an encouraging sign.
Another one of our top prospects, Ryan Jennings, struck out two in two innings of work while walking a batter and allowing a hit. He had a 33 whiff % and averaged 94.7 mph on his sinker.
Amir Garrett gave up three runs but that’s not a concern at this point. After throwing his last pitch, he signaled to the dugout and was pulled from the game. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Saturday, as they’ll head to the home of the Atlanta Braves at 1:05 PM ET. According to MLB Pipeline’s Keegan Matheson, it’s expected to be a bullpen day, before Max Scherzer and José Berríos tag team Sunday’s game.
