The Toronto Blue Jays are back in the win column.
On Thursday afternoon, they defeated the Cleveland Guardians 6-0 in the series finale to win two of three games. Moreover, their record has jumped to 43-37. Let’s take a look at what happened in this game!
The Jays got things going in the top of the third, as Nathan Lukes hit a bases-loaded line drive single that scored two runners. Shortly after, the Jays cashed in on a failed pick-off play, as Guardians’ first baseman Kyle Manzardo failed to catch the ball and Myles Straw came in to score.
Toronto’s 3-0 lead held up all the way until the top of the ninth before they added three more runs. With the bases loaded, Alejandro Kirk hit a two-run single, which was followed by a throwing error from Steven Kwan, allowing a third runner to score. That’s all the Blue Jays needed.

Takeaways…

In his last start on June 19, Kevin Gausman threw four and one-third innings with seven earned runs given up. Coming into Thursday’s game, the righty had a 7.65 ERA and a 6.47 FIP in 20 innings pitched over his last four starts. Thursday was a great bounce-back game, as he went eight scoreless innings with six strikeouts, two hits, and one walk. Guasman also hit a batter, but there’s a reason for that
For the second game in a row, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was hit by a pitch. This time, he was taken out of the game with a forearm bruise in the top of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Guasman hit Jose Ramirez with a pitch, and both benches were warned.
Thanks to Guasman pitching eight innings, the bullpen will get a chance to rest up. The only reliever they used was Chad Green, who pitched a scoreless inning, walking a batter and striking out a batter.
On Wednesday, the Blue Jays were a dismal 1-10 with runners in scoring position, leaving 10 on in a 5-4 extra-inning loss. They were only 2-9 in Thursday’s game, but those two hits came with the bases loaded, cashing in four runs. They also left just four runners on, an improvement.
Myles Straw finished with two hits, the most of any Blue Jay batter. Addison Barger and Jonatan Clase each had a hit. Nathan Lukes and Alejandro Kirk drove in two runs each with a bases-loaded single. All six of the Blue Jays’ hits were singles.
That said, a win is a win. If you’re a glass-half-empty type of person, the Blue Jays avoided losing their third series in their last four. But if you’re a glass-half-full type of person, the Jays have now won seven of their last nine series.
The New York Yankees aren’t in action tonight, which means the Jays gained half a game on them, bringing them to just three games back of the division lead. Next up for the Blue Jays is a trip to Fenway Park for a three-game weekend series. Last time in at Fenway, the Jays took three of four. Jose Berrios is expected to start Friday.
