It seems like everything is clicking for the Toronto Blue Jays.
On Thursday afternoon, the Blue Jays played the rubber match against the Philadelphia Phillies, defeating them 9-1 to move to four games above .500. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!
After a scoreless first inning, the Blue Jays scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first off the bat of Myles Straw, as he hit his sixth double of the season. He was driven in by Tyler Heineman, who hit his fifth double of the season. To cap off the bottom of the second, Bo Bichette hit a two-run home run to give the Blue Jays an early 4-0 lead.
After another scoreless inning thrown by Chris Bassitt, the Jays put up another four-spot in the bottom of the third, with Straw driving in two with a bases-loaded single. Heineman also drove in two with a one-out single, giving them an 8-0 lead.
The only blemish in this game for the Jays came in the top of the sixth, as Kyle Schwarber singled in Trea Turner to move the Phillies to within seven. But the Jays restored their eight-run lead thanks to an RBI single from Alejandro Kirk.
Takeaways…
For the first time since April 18, the Blue Jays sit four games above .500, the highest mark they’ve been all season. Moreover, they are 8-2 in their last 10 games, moving them into a tie for the final Wild Card spot with the Seattle Mariners.
The bottom half of the Blue Jays’ lineup had a great day. Both Tyler Heineman and Myles Straw had two-hit, three-RBI games. Ernie Clement also had a two-hit day, while Davis Schneider had a hit and a walk. The only player without a hit in the Jays’ bottom five was Jonatan Clase, but he drew a walk.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s on-base streak was snapped at 33 games, as he failed to reach base on Thursday afternoon. The good news is that Bo Bichette hit his eighth home run of the season, and Alejandro Kirk continues to swing the bat well, going 3-4 with three singles.
Not only was the offence clicking, but so too was the Blue Jays’ pitching. Chris Bassitt went seven innings, striking out six and giving up an earned run to bring his season ERA to 3.56. Mason Fluharty struck out Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber in a scoreless inning, and Erik Swanson threw his first scoreless outing of the season.
After scoring just six runs on their six-game road trip, the Blue Jays’ offence exploded for 53 runs on their seven-game home stand. Talk about inconsistency.
Next up for the Jays is another road trip, as they head to Minnesota for a three-game weekend series against the Twins. They’ll also have stops in St. Louis and Philadelphia before their next home game.
