Despite having the winning run at the plate, it wasn’t to be for the Toronto Blue Jays.
On Sunday afternoon, the Blue Jays had an opportunity to sweep the Miami Marlins, but ended up falling 5-3 to the National League East team to drop their record to 76-55. Let’s take a look at what went on in this one.
The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the third, but that changed when Marlins’ first baseman Eric Wagaman hit a solo home run off Kevin Gausman. In the bottom of the fifth, Jakob Marsee hit a bases-clearing triple to put the Marlins up 4-0.
Toronto got some hope in the top of the seventh. After Bo Bichette hit a single and Ty France drew a walk, up stepped Daulton Varsho, who hit his 15th home run of the season in just his 43rd game.
Unfortunately, the Marlins got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, as Agustín Ramírez hit an RBI single for a 5-3 lead. The Jays threatened, but ultimately weren’t able to get another run.

Takeaways…

In the top of the eighth, the Jays had the winning run at the plate, as they called upon Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to pinch hit. It was the first baseman’s first appearance since he was pulled from Wednesday’s game with hamstring tightness, but he popped out to end the inning.
Daulton Varsho now has 15 home runs in 170 plate appearances, or a home run every 11.33 plate appearances. He started the season hammering balls in Spring Training, hit several home runs in his rehab outings, and has been the Blue Jays’ most prolific power bat this season.
After a four-hit performance on Saturday, Bo Bichette had two more hits in this game, a double in the first inning and a single to kick-start the comeback attempt in the seventh inning. Davis Schneider had the other hit.
Kevin Gausman began his outing strong, giving up four hits, one earned run, and five strikeouts through four innings. However, he ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth, giving up two singles and a walk to load the bases. Jakob Marsee hit a three-run triple. In the end, Gausman finished six innings with four earned runs, one walk, and seven strikeouts.
Yariel Roríguez had another tough outing from the bullpen, giving up an earned run in his inning of work. Paxton Schultz, who was called up before the game, pitched an inning with a strikeout.
It would’ve been nice to win all three games, considering either the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox will gain a game on the Jays by the end of Sunday. Either way, they’ll have another chance to get a win on Monday, as they return home to host the Minnesota Twins. Monday’s game has a 7:07 PM ET start time, with Max Scherzer as the Blue Jays’ expected starter.
