Another day, another comeback for the Toronto Blue Jays.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Jays defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 to move to 38-30 this season. This is their second sweep in their last four series, and the Blue Jays continue to roll. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!
In the bottom of the first, Masyn Winn hit a single, and after an Eric Lauer two-base error, Wilson Contreras drove in Wynn for the first run of the game. The following inning, Yohel Pozo hit a solo home run to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
It was all the Jays from there, though. In the top of the third, Bo Bichette hit an RBI single to drive in Tyler Heineman. The same inning saw George Springer hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to draw even.
In the top of the fourth, Bichette hit a sacrifice fly to score Myles Straw, and Jonatan Clase was driven in thanks to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s RBI single. Their insurance marker came in the top of the fifth, as Ernie Clement hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo home run to make it 5-2.

Takeaways…

Since being swept at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays in late May, the Blue Jays have gone on to win 13 of their last 16 games. They are now at a season-high eight games over .500 and are 3.5 games back of the New York Yankees for the top spot in the American League East. It’s worth noting the Yankees are in action on Wednesday evening. The Jays have a 22-10 record since May 8, the best record in baseball.
This was the Blue Jays’ 21st comeback win of the season. Only one other team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, has more comeback wins this season.
Ernie Clement had a terrific game, going 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a single. The utility player is now slashing .280/.317/.406 for a 104 wRC+, along with fantastic defence. He was removed from the game with a lower-body injury, but should be alright.
Alejandro Kirk had another multi-hit game, registering two singles, as did Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bo Bichette finished with two RBIs and a base hit, while Myles Straw hit a single. Jonatan Clase had a rough game, striking out three times.
Eric Lauer made the start in this one, going four and one-third innings with two earned runs and four strikeouts to bring his season ERA to 2.37. It feels like this spot in the rotation is occupied by Lauer and Spencer Turnbull, who happened to make his Blue Jays debut in this game, going two innings with two strikeouts.
Braydon Fisher got the final two outs of the fifth inning, striking out a batter. In relief, Fisher now has 13 innings pitched, hasn’t given up a run, has walked one batter, and has a 38.9 K%. He’s on an insane run.
Brendon Little has also been terrific this season, and he struck out the side in his inning of work. Yariel Rodriguez closed the game, picking up his first career big league save, punctuated by a strikeout to end the game.
The Jays have now won five consecutive series, defeating the Texas Rangers, Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, and Cardinals. Up next is a weekend series against the Phillies after an off-day on Thursday. Kevin Gausman is the expected starter for Friday’s game.
