The losing streak is over!
On Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-1, ending their five-game losing streak. Their record now sits at 73-80 with just three more games left this season.
In the bottom of the fourth, Alejandro Kirk extended his hitting streak to 17 games, as he hit his 19th double of the season for the 1-0 lead. Ernie Clement drove Kirk in two batters later with a single.
Kirk added to his RBI total, as he hit a single on a fly ball to the outfield with Tyler Heineman and Jonatan Clase scoring. Sadly, Kirk was thrown out trying to get to second. After Boston broke up Kevin Gausman’s shutout, Clase hit his first big league home run to make it 6-1.

Diving into the stats…

Alejandro Kirk has been fantastic in September, as every single game he’s had an at-bat, he’s had at least one hit. With his three-hit performance on Wednesday, he’s now slashing .253/.318/.361 with five home runs in 377 plate appearances for a 94 wRC+. Moreover, he has a 17-game hitting streak. Could he get to 100 wRC+ to end the year? We’ll see.
The catcher wasn’t the only Blue Jay with a three-hit performance, as Jonatan Clase had his best game in the big leagues. On top of his first career home run, he also had two singles and a walk.
Ernie Clement and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each had two-hit performances, with the latter hitting his 44th double of the season. Joey Loperfido was the only other Blue Jay with a hit in the game, while also striking out three times.
Pitching was solid for the Jays, as Kevin Gausman finished with a line of 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K to end his season with a 3.83 ERA. Brendon Little struck out a batter in an inning of work, while Erik Swanson pitched a clean inning with a strikeout. Chad Green pitched in the ninth, allowing a hit and striking out the final batter to end the game.
Wins at this time of year aren’t great for the Jays in regards to a high draft pick. However, the Pittsburgh Pirates also won their game on Wednesday, meaning that the Jays’ odds of moving up to the first-overall pick remain at 7.48%.
Toronto starts their final series of the season on Friday, as they’ll host the Miami Marlins for a three-game set. José Berríos is set to start for the Jays.
