Kendrys Morales left last night’s win in Baltimore and was ultimately diagnosed with a Grade 1 Hamstring Strain. Today, we learned that Morales had been put on the 10-day disabled list and lefty reliever Tim Mayza had been recalled in his place.

Morales has had kind of a strange start to the 2018 season. Due to Josh Donaldson’s dead arm pushing him to the designated hitter role, Morales has been relegated to the bench in multiple games. He’s made 25 plate appearances, has five hits, one for extra bases, two walks, and eight strikeouts. I wouldn’t say he’s exactly swinging the bat well thus far.

Still, I don’t think the Jays are better off with Morales on the DL than they are with him on the team. While this does ultimately give them more versatility to give Russell Martin, Devon Travis, or Josh Donaldson a day at DH, they lose a good pinch-hitting power bat and they don’t have the extremely versatile Yangervis Solarte coming off the bench.

Rolling with an eight-man ‘pen will give Toronto a lefty option not named Aaron Loup, but it also means they’ll only have Gift Ngoepe, Luke Maile, and Steve Pearce off of the bench. Mayza has yet to throw with Buffalo this season as the Bisons finally made their 2018 debut last night due to their first few games being snowed out.
