Large Adult Sons Update: Vlad, of course, wins Minor League Player of the Year

Vlad Guerrero Jr’s season came to an end on Monday when the Buffalo Bisons lost 2-0 to the Syracuse SkyChiefs. Of course, Vlad should be up with the big league team this month, but he won’t be because of service time. We’ve all accepted that by this point.
Anyways, Vlad was named USA Today’s Minor League Player of the Year and MLB Pipeline’s Hitter of the Year, which is a nice (and, well, expected) way to cap off a legendary season with New Hampshire and Buffalo. In 95 games between Double- and Triple-A, Vlad slashed a .381/.437/.636 line with 20 homers. The most impressive part and best indication of how good he actually is comes from the fact he had roughly the same amount of walks as he did strikeouts.
“I played college baseball with Tony Gwynn; I played in the majors with Don Mattingly. And those two guys, great hitters, just had more time than me,” (Bobby) Meacham said. What he meant was Gwynn and Mattingly could move their hands so quickly that they had a longer time to react on a pitch after it broke (curve) or stuck in the strike zone (fastball). Guerrero has that fast of a bat. If you have good bat speed, you eliminate a lot of worry.” – USA Today“It was certainly encouraging to see the consistency of approach and plate discipline as he moved up each level,” Blue Jays farm director Gil Kim said. “What was most encouraging was to see the level of commitment to improving his defensive footwork and athleticism, and how he’d consistently challenge himself to be the best teammate, athlete and third baseman he could possibly be.”
Vlad joins Ronald Acuna, Alex Bregman, Blake Snell, Kris Bryant, and Xander Bogaerts as USA Today’s most recent five recipients of the award. That’s some pretty handsome company.
