The Toronto Blue Jays could be interested in some of the players that were non-tendered on Friday.
Overall, there were more than 60 players who were non-tendered on Friday. The Blue Jays should target a few of them, as there are some buy-low, high-reward type candidates after Friday’s non-tender deadline
Let’s take a look at some of those players.

Some non-tenders the Blue Jays should consider

Switch hitters are always intriguing, and Dylan Carlson is no exception. It was a tough season for the 26-year-old, as he split time between the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays, slashing .209/.287/.277 with three home runs. It was his third consecutive season with a wRC+ below 100, with the 2021 season where he slashed .266/.343/.437 with 18 home runs in 619 plate appearances being the career watermark.
Sticking with outfielders who showed promise early in their career, Gavin Sheets also had a good 2021 season, slashing .250/.324/.506 with 11 home runs in 179 plate appearances. His 2022 was okay, finishing the season with a career-high 15 home runs in 410 plate appearances, but he hasn’t been great the past two seasons. Last season with the Chicago White Sox, the 28-year-old slashed .233/.303/.357 with 10 home runs in 501 plate appearances for an 88 wRC+.
Carlson and Sheets were each selected within the first two rounds of their respective drafts, but Nick Madrigal was selected fourth overall in the 2018 draft. After two solid seasons with the White Sox in 2020 and 2021, Madrigal has been unable to capture the same form in the past three seasons with their city rivals, the Chicago Cubs. Last season, the 27-year-old slashed .221/.280/.256 with no home runs in 94 plate appearances as his season was derailed by injury.
George Valera never figured it out upon reaching Triple-A, but the former Cleveland Guardian ranked as the 47th-best prospect in baseball as recently as the 2022 mid-season update and was the 51st-best prospect in baseball in MLB Pipeline’s 2023 mid-season update. Last season in Triple-A, the 24-year-old slashed .248/.337/.452 with 17 home runs in 374 plate appearances for a 104 wRC+. It’s worth mentioning that he ruptured his patellar tendon in his right knee (ow) and will be out to start the 2025 season.
Another player who was in the Guardians organization in 2024 was Ramón Laureano, who had a good bounce-back season in 2024 with the Guardians and the Atlanta Braves. Last season, he slashed .259/.311/.437 with 11 home runs in 226 plate appearances. With the Braves, Laureano had a 129 wRC+, slashing .296/.327/.505 with 10 home runs and mashed left-handed pitchers.
The Blue Jays non-tendered Canadian closer Jordan Romano ahead of the non-tender deadline. Well, there’s a closer and a Canadian that the Blue Jays could target. Port Hope, Ontario product Cal Quantrill had a 4.98 ERA and a 5.32 FIP in 148.1 innings last season with the Colorado Rockies. However, he had a 3.38 ERA and a 4.12 FIP in 186.1 innings with the Cleveland Guardians in 2022.
Kyle Finnigan picked up 38 saves for the Washington Nationals, third-most in the league. For some odd reason, the Nationals non-tendered the 33-year-old righty, despite posting a 3.68 ERA and a 4.25 FIP in 63.2 innings pitched. For his career, Finnigan has a 3.56 ERA and a 4.24 FIP in 290.1 innings pitched.
