There’s a decent chance that Yimi García makes his 2026 season debut later this week.
The rehabbing 35-year-old reliever is scheduled to make a third and possibly final Triple-A rehab appearance on Tuesday, according to Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider, as relayed by Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling. After that, he’ll meet up with the big-league club, likely in Boston, to map out what comes next.
If all goes well on Tuesday night with the Bisons, García’s next steps will likely involve being activated from the 60-day injured list. At which point, the Blue Jays must create space on both the 40-man and active rosters.
García, who began this season on the IL after undergoing off-season elbow surgery, has already completed six rehab appearances — five since his rehab was paused in early May due to reporting lingering soreness from his initial outing in the Florida Complex League.
There was some concern after García’s velocity dipped considerably in his first Triple-A rehab outing on June 10. But that appears to have calmed, at least to a certain degree, after mostly sitting 94-95 m.p.h. (97.1 max) with the fastballs in his most recent appearance on Saturday — allowing one run on two hits and zero walks while striking out one batter through an inning of work.
The Blue Jays are likely applying extra caution here, affording García an additional outing to potentially allow the velocity on all his pitches, not just his heaters, to tick back up closer to last season’s averages.
It’s also important to remember that the veteran hurler hasn’t pitched in a major-league environment in almost an entire year, with his last Blue Jays appearance dating back to July 2. And before that, he had spent a month and a half on the IL.
So, they want to make sure that when García returns this time, it’s for good.
