After Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Yimi García was deemed “pretty close” by manager John Schneider, the reliever took another step closer to returning on Saturday night.
García made his second rehab appearance in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons and was able to toss one full inning at the minor league’s highest level for the first time as he works his way back from last September’s elbow surgery.
The 35-year-old entered to open the top of the sixth inning during the Bisons 8-7 win against the Syracuse Mets, and turned in a pitching line of 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. García threw 17 pitches (11 strikes), and showcased better control than he had during his first outing with the Bisons when he allowed one run on one hit and two walks, and was forced to throw 21 pitches (eight strikes) over two-thirds of an inning.
García opened the inning by allowing back-to-back singles, first on a 105.9 MPH line drive by former Atlanta Braves’ top-ranked prospect Cristian Pache, who then stole second, then on a bunt single by Jackson Cluff, which advanced Pache to third base. Cluff, like Pache, stole second base to set the Mets up with runners at second and third and nobody out.
Facing a dangerous situation, García got Kevin Parada to pop out on a 2-2 count with a 94.4 MPH fastball that jammed the Mets’ catcher. Up next was Matt Rudick, who swung on a first-pitch curveball that came in at 82.6 MPH and induced a groundout to first baseman Ryan McCarty to bring home Pache.
With Cluff on third base with two outs, García struck out Mets’ leadoff batter Ji Hwan Bae to escape the frame. García fell behind 1-0 in the count before firing off three straight strikes, using his slider and changeup before putting Bae away with a 95.8 MPH fastball.
During Saturday’s outing, García threw nine fastballs, eight more than the one he threw during his first outing with the Bisons. García topped out at 97.1 MPH and looked more like the reliever who appeared in 22 games with the Blue Jays last season and went 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 21 innings pitched.
In four rehab outings across two minor league levels, García has recorded a 4.91 ERA and 1.91 WHIP across 3.2 innings pitched while striking out four batters.
