Blue Jays outright Simeon Woods Richardson to Triple-A Buffalo

The Toronto Blue Jays retained some pitching depth late Monday night.
Per the MLB transaction log, Simeon Woods Richardson, who was designated for assignment last Friday to clear a roster spot for CJ Van Eyk, has been outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo.
Originally acquired by the Blue Jays from the Minnesota Twins on June 4 in exchange for cash considerations, Woods Richardson has pitched in eight games with the Blue Jays this season and is 2-0 with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
The right-hander has struck out 14 batters across his 18.1 innings pitched and held opponents to a .222 average during that span. While Woods Richardson did well to limit damage, he struggled with walks, highlighted by 12 across his 18.1 frames.
After opening his Blue Jays tenure by allowing only one earned run across his first 16.1 innings pitched, Woods Richardson had been tagged for seven earned runs across his past two outings. That included turning in a pitching line of 1.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, during a 13-2 loss against the Kansas City Royals on August 27.
Following the addition of Michael Lorenzen, Woods Richardson’s role within the Blue Jays’ bullpen became unclear, leading to him being DFA’d. This is the second time this season the 25-year-old has been DFA’d by the Blue Jays, with both times resulting in him being outrighted to Buffalo.
For the season between both the Blue Jays and Twins, Woods Richardson is 2-7 with a 6.68 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP. The righty has totalled 40 strikeouts over his 66 innings and been hit at a .304 clip.
A former No. 3-ranked prospect with the Blue Jays in 2020, Woods Richardson has pitched in six games (five starts) with the Bisons this season and has gone 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. With rosters being expanded in September, Woods Richardson should remain in consideration to receive another opportunity if the club’s bullpen becomes overworked throughout the month.
