According to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi and Ben Nicholson-Smith, the Toronto Blue Jays are set to sign free agent pitcher Spencer Turnbull to a Major League deal. Jon Heyman of the New York Post also reports that the Jays are slated to sign recently DFA’d right-hander José Ureña. The terms of both deals are not known at this time and are pending physicals, but they are both reportedly Major League contracts.
Turnbull spent the 2024 season with the Philadelphia Phillies and crafted a 2.65 ERA through 17 games, seven of which were starts. Working between the rotation and the bullpen for the Phillies, the right-hander crafted a 3.85 FIP and a 1.049 WHIP through 54 1/3 innings while striking out 58 batters.
The former 2014 second-round pick of the Detroit Tigers boasts an excellent sweeper, which generated a 30.8% whiff rate last year and held hitters to a .221 wOBA. Turnbull also works with a four-seam fastball, sinker, curveball, changeup, and slider and can be used as both a starter and a reliever for manager John Schneider.
Turnbull remained unsigned heading into the new season after his one-year stint in Philadelphia. Injuries have been the biggest hurdle for the veteran arm, being limited last year due to a right lat strain. He’s also landed on the IL due to neck discomfort and Tommy John surgery in recent memory, and struggled to a 7.26 ERA in 2023 after returning from his elbow procedure. He will most likely need to be built back up in the minor leagues before being considered ready for MLB action.
José Ureña was recently DFA’d by the New York Mets after starting the year in triple-A and then making one appearance for New York on April 28th, allowing five runs off seven hits to the Nationals.
An 11-year veteran in the big leagues, Ureña spent his early years with the Miami Marlins, authoring a 4.60 ERA through 142 outings (98 starts). For his career, the Dominican product has spent time with seven different organizations and owns a collective 4.80 ERA and a 4.89 FIP through 951 1/3 innings.
Ureña boasts a four-pitch mix and works mostly between a slider, sinker, and a changeup and is predominantly a groundball pitcher that can hit the higher 90-MPH range with his fastball offerings.
Jose Urena and Spencer Turnbull both going to Jays. MLB deals. Pending physicals. @ShiDavidi and @bnicholsonsmith on Turnbull
While he struggled during his brief tenure with the Mets, Ureña is another veteran arm that adds some depth to the organization, most likely in the bullpen, but does boast starting experience if needed, especially since the Jays will need someone in short order for the fifth rotation spot.
