The Toronto Blue Jays have signed free agent reliever Nic Enright to a two-year minor league deal, per Alden González of ESPN.
The 28-year-old made his major league debut last season with the Cleveland Guardians, posting a 2.03 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and an 8.7 K/9 through 27 games. Enright was placed on the 15-day IL with right elbow/forearm inflammation on September 4th, and about a month later, it was announced that he would need Tommy John surgery.
The Guardians designated Enright for assignment on November 18th, and he was officially non-tendered by the club a few days later, making him a free agent.
The Richmond, Virginia, native was drafted in the 19th round out of high school by the New York Mets in 2015; however, he did not sign and opted to play collegiate baseball at Virginia Tech. He was drafted in the 20th round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the then-Cleveland Indians and would pitch in rookie ball at the backend of that season.
Following the 2022 season, Enright was claimed by the Miami Marlins in that year’s Rule 5 Draft. A couple of weeks after that, he was unfortunately diagnosed (and has since beaten) with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on December 22nd. Despite having to undergo treatments, he continued to pitch and was logging innings for Jacksonville, Miami’s Triple-A club, in May of the 2023 campaign.
Miami would designate Enright for assignment later that month, and he would be returned to the Guardians shortly thereafter.
Enright posted solid numbers between the 2024 and 2025 seasons at Triple-A Columbus despite battling a lat injury in the former season. Between those two seasons, he allowed just four earned runs and 16 hits over 30 innings, earning himself a promotion to the major league club in May of last year.
Enright features a four-seam fastball that sat at 93.2 mph last season. He also threw a slider (primarily to righties) and a curveball (primarily to lefties), with the slider generating a 42.9% whiff rate.
His best stretch of baseball came between May 31st and July 11th, when he did not allow a run over 11 1/3 frames, including picking up his first major league win that, as fate would have it, came against the Blue Jays.
Enright will be rehabbing during the 2026 campaign, and if all goes well, Blue Jays fans will get to see him on the mound ahead of the 2027 season.
