The Toronto Blue Jays are adding some left-handed depth to the organization.
Per ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, the Blue Jays have signed Josh Fleming to a minor league deal with an invite to big league spring training.
Drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017, Fleming made his big league debut in 2020 and has amassed 254 2/3 innings across five seasons at the top level. Fleming has been a versatile pitcher over the years, making 25 starts out of his 80 appearances on the mound, amassing a 4.77 ERA and a 4.65 FIP with a 1.433 WHIP. During his four seasons in the AL East, Fleming was riding the options bus between the minor leagues and the Rays roster, while also missing time on the IL for a variety of issues, most notably landing on the 60-day IL in 2023 for an elbow issue.
Fleming was with the Rays before being claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2023/2024 offseason, but still elected free agency shortly after. Fleming would later sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he made 25 appearances to the tune of a 4.02 ERA before he was let go in late July, signing with the Seattle Mariners shortly after.
The Missouri product has spent the past year and a half in the Mariners’ minor league system, spending all last season in Triple-A Tacoma. Across 47 outings (three starts), Fleming pitched to a 4.91 ERA and a 1.530 WHIP across 84 1/3 innings, working mostly as a bulk inning reliever with a 4.7 K/9 and a 3.1 BB/9.
Fleming works best by limiting the hard contact and is primarily a groundball pitcher, posting a 58.2% groundball rate throughout his career.
With this signing, the 29-year-old joins Brendon Little, Eric Lauer, Mason Fluharty, Jimmy Burnette, and Javen Coleman as left-handed options in the Jays’ reliever depth charts.
