The Toronto Blue Jays will be without one of their biggest bats for the ALCS.
Bo Bichette, who is rehabbing from a knee sprain suffered against the Yankees back in early September, will not be added to the roster for the upcoming series against the Seattle Mariners, as per Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae.
Bichette has been completing running, hitting, and throwing drills as of late, but a video surfaced yesterday of a recent running session on the base paths that showed the Jays shortstop grimacing as he rounded second base before leaving the field with the coaching staff.
The Florida product was one of the top bats not just on the Jays squad, but the entire American League before landing on the IL. Despite not suiting up for the remaining few weeks in the regular season, Bichette finished just three hits behind Bobby Witt Jr. for the hit crown in the AL, finishing with 181 knocks. Producing a 3.4 bWAR, the shortstop finished the campaign with a .311/.357/.483 slash line with 44 doubles, 18 home runs, and 94 RBIs and was going to be a key contributor for the Jays down the stretch.
While his fielding has taken a bit of a hit this year, Bichette’s bat would have been a welcome addition to the postseason roster, and he likely would have been working out of the DH spot had he been healthy enough to earn a roster spot. There was some potential talk that he may be added to the roster so that a midway return through the series was possible; however, that does not appear to be the case per Mae.
With Bichette now off the ALCS roster, the Jays will likely keep the same group of roster players from the ALDS heading into this series with the Mariners. Had Bichette been good to go, Isiah Kiner-Falefa was a potential name that may have been dropped to accommodate the infielder.
