Bo Bichette seems to have avoided a long-term injury stint but it’s still news the Toronto Blue Jays aren’t happy to hear.
After seeking a second opinion on his knee in Dallas, Bichette’s knee sprain is considered minor, so he doesn’t require surgery and instead will rest and rehab to get back to full strength. However, Manager John Schneider confirmed that Bichette will be out for the remainder of the regular campaign, and the Jays are hoping he can return for the postseason and could begin baseball activity later this week, but there is no set timeline.
Bichette last played on September 6th against the New York Yankees, when he collided with catcher Austin Wells at home plate.
The Blue Jays’ shortstop has been on an impressive run this season, compiling a .311/.357/.483 slash line with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. He has amassed a 127 OPS+ and a 3.4 bWAR through 582 at-bats, and despite missing over a week on the IL, he still leads the Major Leagues in hits (181) and doubles (44).
While his defensive metrics haven’t been as hot as his bat this season, the Florida product has been a go-to name in the lineup this year, and the Jays will miss his bat down the stretch as they continue to fight for a playoff spot. The Jays will likely make the postseason given that their ‘magic number’ sits at four, but avoiding the Wild Card is the main goal, given their recent struggles since their postseason run in 2016. The division clinching number sits at seven.
Since Bichette has been out of the lineup, the Jays boast a 6-2 record and have won five in a row, including a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. Andres Gimenez and Ernie Clement have suited up at shortstop during his absence, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa can fill in on the left side of second base if required.
With Bichette out of the lineup and the pending return of Anthony Santander sometime either later this week or early next week, it will be one less roster decision for the Blue Jays front office to figure out.
It’s a disappointing way to end the regular season for Bo Bichette, who is looking to cash in this free agency. For the Blue Jays and Bichette’s sake, the goal will be the knee being cleared and ready to go when Toronto plays October baseball, which fans hope is in the ALDS and not the Wild Card round.
