An interesting development has come from the free agent front regarding former Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette.
Mark Feinsand, a senior reporter with the MLB Network, noted on social media that Bichette has told interested teams that he is willing to move to second base. The Florida product has primarily been a shortstop for his big league and professional career, having suited up at second base for a handful of games during the Jays’ World Series run this past season.
Bichette has produced mixed results on the left side of second base.
Across 6184 innings at shortstop, the 27-year-old owns a -19 DRS with 84 errors and has produced a .966 fielding percentage, which is .007 below the league average for the position. In 2021, Bichette led the league in errors (24) and followed that with 23 errors in 2022.
He dramatically improved in 2023, producing a +4 DRS while committing just eight errors across 130 games, but has since gone back to his old ways, authoring a -12 DRS last season with 12 errors across 132 contests. For his career, Bichette owns a -27 fielding run value and a -33 Outs Above Average. He amassed a -13 OAA last season, ranking in the first percentile.
The move to second base makes sense for Bichette, as his below-average arm and fielding ability suit him more for that position over shortstop and/or third base. While there is no guarantee that he will find renewed success defensively with a position switch, any team that signs Bichette is looking for his bat over his fielding anyway.
The right-handed bat owns a career .294/.337/.469 slash line with a .806 OPS. Across seven seasons and 3075 at-bats, Bichette has amassed a 21.0 bWAR with 111 home runs and 437 RBIs while also leading the American League in hits in 2021 and 2022.
After injuries cut his season short in 2024, Bichette bounced back last season to the tune of a .311/.357/.483 slash line with 181 hits, 44 doubles, 18 home runs, and a team-leading 91 RBIs with a .840 OPS. Had he finished the season healthy instead of missing the last few weeks on the IL with a knee injury, Bichette likely would have led the league in hits and doubles.
With this recent news, Bichette’s market potentially opens up to some more teams that would be interested in his services away from the shortstop position as he seeks a long-term deal.
