Ryan O’Hearn is cashing in this winter.
Per Robert Murray at FanSided, the Florida product has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $29 million.
The left-handed hitting outfielder and first baseman has been gaining momentum since becoming a full-time player in 2023 after he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. Last season was his best year yet, with O’Hearn putting forth a .283/.374/.463 slash line through 94 games with the O’s before he was traded to the San Diego Padres at the deadline. With the Orioles, he added 15 doubles and 13 home runs to the tune of a .837 OPS while earning his first All-Star nomination.
In the NL West, O’Hearn continued to put the ball in play despite a slight dip in his power numbers, producing a .276/.350/.387 slash line with a .736 OPS. He amassed just six doubles and four home runs across 50 games. In the postseason, he went 2 for 9 at the plate with one walk. His 17 home runs and 63 RBIs spread between both squads are both career highs.
While struggling to find regular playing time with the Kansas City Royals through his first five seasons in the big leagues, O’Hearn was a regular in the O’s lineup. Across parts of three seasons, he produced a 5.2 bWAR and finished with a .277/.342/.454 slash line across 348 games. He also added 58 doubles, 42 home runs, and 162 RBIs during that time.
For O’Hearn, the 32-year-old secures a strong payday that should see him garner regular playing time with the Pirates. Working as a DH and at first base for most of the year, he will be competing with former Blue Jay Spencer Horwitz and Rafael Flores Jr. for playing time on the right side of the diamond, while also working in the DH spot with Bryan Reynolds likely heading back to the outfield. O’Hearn can also work in the corner outfield spots if needed.
With this signing, the Pirates add another bat into the mix after a successful couple of days. They recently added Brandon Lowe, Mason Montgomery, and Jake Magnum from the Tampa Bay Rays as part of a three-way trade earlier this week, and also added Jhostynxon Garcia from the Red Sox this winter, who should factor into their outfield this season. Pittsburgh also bolstered its bullpen by signing Gregory Soto last week.
While they were unsuccessful in their rumoured pursuit of Kyle Schwarber, adding O’Hearn puts the Bucs in a better spot roster-wise heading into 2026, who should boast one of the most intriguing rotations in the league led by NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, and top prospect pitcher Bubba Chandler while infielder Konnor Griffin, the top prospect in all of baseball per MLB Pipeline for 2026, is waiting in the wings as well.
