The New York Yankees may finally be doing something.
On Sunday evening, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees have given Cody Bellinger a second offer. The contract details are unknown, but it looks as if the Yankees finally may try to do something since being embarrassed in the American League Divisional Series.
Bellinger is seen as one of the best bats available in free agency, alongside Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman, and Kyle Tucker. While the latter is the best bat available, Bellinger is coming off his strongest season since his National League MVP winning season in 2019. In 656 plate appearances, the outfielder/first baseman slashed .272/.334/.480 with 29 home runs for a 125 wRC+ and 4.9 fWAR.
Of course, the Toronto Blue Jays have been connected to Bellinger, as well Tucker, Bichette, and Bregman. The latter two look increasingly unlikely with the signing of Kazuma Okamoto. That said, it seems like the Yankees and their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets, are the heavy favourites to land Bellinger.
The Yankees were once the biggest players on the market, but things have evidently changed. After the Blue Jays embarrassed them in the 2025 ALDS, the Yankees returned fire by re-signing Amed Rosario and Ryan Yarbrough, while Trent Grisham accepted his qualifying offer.
Sure, the World Series didn’t go the Blue Jays way, as they lost in heart-breaking fashion. However, they’ve gone out and signed Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Tyler Rogers, and Okamoto, with potentially more moves on the way. That’s a lot more than what the Yankees did after they lost in five games to the Dodgers in the 2024 World Series.
We’ve gotten to the point that the small market Baltimore Orioles have dished out more money and have done more to make their team better than the Yankees. So have the Tampa Bay Rays, while the Boston Red Sox have improved their team through trade
It’s to be seen where Bellinger ends up, but things will be rough for the Yankees if they lose another productive bat in free agency, having lost Juan Soto last year.
