The Toronto Blue Jays struck a deal on Saturday with an American League East rival, the Boston Red Sox. Toronto sent catcher Danny Jansen, the longest-serving member of the Blue Jays, to the Sox in return for three prospects: infielder Cutter Coffey, infielder Eddinson Paulino, and right-handed Gilberto Batista.

Infielder Eddison Paulino, Double-A

Eddison Paulino,  from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has five active seasons with the Red Sox organization. He joined Boston in the 2018 international signing period. His career started in the Dominican Summer League and year by year he consecutively climbed to the next rank.
Paulino signed as a three-spot serving infielder, playing second base, shortstop, and third base. His prospect profile was mediocre at the start and grew into optimism and success. In 2022 he made his way onto the top 100 prospect list by MLB. Paulino’s current level is double-A.
Paulino does not stand out as a very physically intimidating guy, however his actions compensate for it. The 5’10” 155-pounder is known for his clutch ability and his hitter’s tactics. His left-handed swing is very simple with quick bat speed and a clean bat path.
He keeps his hands in as he gets fed the inside burner which he’s able to turn on quickly and effectively. Paulino has a compact swing with gap-to-gap ability and tendencies to put the ball in play. His power is also evident with the ability to go deep.
In 2023 Paulino recorded 113 hits, 58 RBIs and 12 home runs. So far in double-A Portland, his numbers are on the rise. The important statistic to note is his stolen bases. In the past two full seasons, Paulino has recorded 53 stolen bags with a mark of 10 so far in 2024.
The speedy infielder is overall athletic and defensively sound. His best spot on the diamond would probably be the middle infield.

Right-Handed Pitcher, Gilberto Batista, Single-A

From the Dominican Republic, Gilberto Batista was signed by the Red Sox in 2022 to a minor league contract. He’s barely scratched the surface in professional baseball, with one full season in 2023, and a portion of 2024.
The 6’0” weighs in at 165 lbs with an athletic structure and a durable arm. Still a little raw and fresh on the bump, Batista is working out the kinks and ironing out the wrinkles in his delivery and fundamentals. His baseline skills are what makes him interesting.
Batista works a four-pitch menu with a four-seam heater up to 95 mph sitting between 92-94 mph consistently. His curveball may be his out-pitch with depth and dive 12-6 style. He also has a slider and changeup for the weapon belt.
Batista shows projection ability with his body and pitches. He has the opportunity to polish one more offspeed option while adding another 2-3 mph on his fastball.
In 2023 and playing in the Dominican Summer League, Batista tossed 40 and 2 / 3 innings, striking out 54 and intriguingly only walking eight. He has a sub-four ERA. Batista throws a lot of strikes and is aggressive with hitters.

Infielder Cutter Coffey, High-A

Cutter Coffey was drafted by the Red Sox in the 2022 draft out of high school. Coffey was a two-way player with numerical projections on both sides of the game. However, Red Sox scouts saw him as an infielder with potential to grow to a first string defender.
Coffey shows out well on the infielder. His plus arm puts him on the left side of the diamond where the throw is taxing. His arm is a 60 on the 20-80 scale and is one of his strongest attributes. Coffey is quick on his feet with high-twitch ability to both arm-side and glove side. He has soft hands and uses his momentum.
His swing is short and compact, and he controls the barrel well. He is primarily a contact hitter looking up the middle for base hits and multi-base hits. This does not neglect the power which he has proven to have.
Coffey will offer up hits, drive in runs, and steal bags. So far in 2024, he’s recorded 57 hits, and 46 RBIs, with 14 home runs and eight stolen bags. This is his career-high in dingers. Last year he totaled six home runs on the season.
