BREAKING: Right-hander Luis Severino and the A’s are in agreement on a three-year, $67 million contract, sources tell ESPN. It is the largest guarantee in the history of the A’s franchise. And even with the qualifying offer attached, Severino got well over market expectations.

Out of transactions to expect this off-season, no one saw this one coming.
On Thursday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Luis Severino had signed a three-year deal with, drum roll please, the Athletics. Severino will earn $67 million over the three seasons with a player opt-out after the 2026 season.
Last season with the New York Mets, Severino had a 3.91 ERA and a 4.21 FIP in 182 innings pitched, with a 21.2 K% and a 7.9 BB%. The Mets made the National League Championship Series, falling to the Dodgers, while Severino had a 3.24 ERA and a 4.43 FIP in 16.2 innings pitched.
Early in his career, Severino looked like the next Yankee ace. In 2017, his first full season, he had a 2.98 ERA and a 3.07 FIP in 193.1 innings pitched with a 29.4 K% and a 6.5 BB%. The following season Severino had a 3.39 ERA and a 2.95 FIP in 191.1 innings pitched, but pitched just 18 innings from 2019 until 2021.
In his only other season with 100+ innings pitched in 2022, Severino had a 3.18 ERA and a 3.70 FIP in 102 innings pitched, along with a 27.7 K% and a 7.4 BB%. When healthy, Severino is an incredibly effective pitcher and any contender would want him. In fact, the Blue Jays were reportedly interested in him.
Yet, he signed with the Athletics, who finished with a 69-93 record, the fifth-worst record in Major League Baseball last season. Moreover, they’re without a major league ballpark for the next three seasons as they’re supposedly moving to Las Vegas, but waiting for a stadium to be built there. They’ll play in Sacramento. Only after they stopped playing in Oakland, did Athletics’ owner John Fisher start spending money. What a disgrace.
Severino will help the Athletics’ rotation as he instantly becomes their best starting pitcher, but they’re still years away from even contending for a postseason spot. It’s such a weird signing for both parties.
