What an uneventful game that was.
On Friday evening, the Toronto Blue Jays took on the Tampa Bay Rays in Florida for the first of three games, falling 1-0 to bring their season record to 73-81.
There was one run in this game, thanks to a Jonathan Aranda home run. This was one of six hits that José Berríos allowed in this game, but he finished with a line of 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K to bring his season ERA to 3.38.
The Blue Jays only had five hits in this game – all singles. Jonatan Clase hit a single in his return to the big leagues, which was a positive sign. Ernie Clement, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Alejandro Kirk, and Nathan Lukes all had one hit as well.
Jonatan Clase's first #BlueJays hit!
Spencer Horwitz had a rough game, as he picked up the Golden Sombrero. As you can imagine, he also went hitless in this game. Horwitz wasn’t the only one to strikeout though, as George Springer, Guerrero Jr., Kirk, Davis Schneider, Addison Barger, Luis De Los Santos, and Leo Jiménez all struck out once.
Speaking of the latter, Jiménez was once again hit with a pitch, shocking, right? His 16 hit by pitches now rank tied for eighth in the league, with Randy Arozarena leading him by only six. The thing is, every player around him has at least 425 plate appearances. So far this season, Jiménez has been hit in 8.4% of his plate appearances. That’s higher than his 6.3 BB% in the big leagues this season.
Randy Arozarena leads the majors in HBPs this season with 22. Leo Jiménez now has 16 in just 57 big-league games. #BlueJays That's a lot of contusions...
The Blue Jays bullpen was perfect in this game. Ryan Burr struck out two in an inning of work, while Zach Pop struck out a batter in his inning of work. Burr could very well be a useful reliever on the 2025 Blue Jays team, as he’s currently rocking a 3.72 ERA and a 3.10 FIP in 28 innings pitched, along with a 31.9 K% and a 10.1 BB%.
With the loss, the Blue Jays have the sixth-highest odds of winning the draft lottery, or 5.31%. The Pittsburgh Pirates only trail the Jays by half a game, so finishing with the fifth-highest odds is a realistic feat.
The Jays return to action on Saturday at 4:10 PM ET. Yariel Rodríguez is expected to start, while Taj Bradley will get the ball for the Rays.
