The Blue Jays got shut out in their 2019 Grapefruit League debut

Baseball is back! The Jays and Tigers got together to play a completely meaningless exhibition game Saturday afternoon, but hey, it’s better than nothing.
Things worth mentioning…
- The pitching was really solid, save for Thomas Pannone. Ryan Borucki started the game, and ended up going two scoreless frames while scattering a couple of hits and a walk. Pannone came in right after him and got slammed for four runs on five hits while recording just two outs. The pitching staff was clean the rest of the way.
- Sammy Gaviglio tossed two scoreless frames, scattering a walk and a hit. Elvis Luciano, perhaps the most interesting storyline in spring training, threw a navigated a scoreless inning and apparently hit 95 mph on the gun. Tim Mayza, Jacob Waguespack, and Jackson McClelland each tossed a scoreless frame. McClelland was apparently hitting 98 mph on the gun.
- All told, the Jays non-Pannone pitchers went eight-and-a-third innings without allowing a run, scattering six hits and three walks.
- The bats got left behind in Toronto, it seems. The Jays managed just five hits and two walks off of Matt Moore and a collection of random Tigers relievers. Of note… Teoscar Hernandez had the first hit of spring, smacking a double off Moore in the first inning. Santiago Espinal, who replaced Brandon Drury mid-way through the game, hit a triple. Bo Bichette got the started as the designated hitter and picked up a single in two trips.
- Kevin Pillar also picked up a walk in his first plate appearance of 2019. Has he finally learned how to be disciplined at the plate??!!? Is this the year??????
- 4-0 Tigers was the final, and the Jays will be back tomorrow in Sarasota against the Trash Birds. The first televised game comes on Monday.
