A former notable Blue Jay has signed a minor league deal.
According to Maria I. Guardado, the San Francisco Giants beat writer for MLB.com, the Giants have signed Cavan Biggio to a minor league deal, with the super-utility player reporting to their Triple-A team.
Biggio, now 29, was selected in the fifth-round of the 2016 draft, and spent parts of four seasons in the Blue Jays minor league system. He ranked as high as their ninth-best prospect during the 2018 mid-season update, eventually making his big league debut in 2019.
The super-utility player took the league by storm in 2019, slashing .234/.364/.429 with 16 home runs in 430 plate appearances for a 115 wRC+, paired with a 16.5 BB% and a 28.6 K%. It was a lost season for the Jays that year, but Biggio also managed to hit for the third cycle in franchise history.

Biggio was arguably the Jays’ best hitter in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, as he slashed .250/.375/.432 with eight home runs in 265 plate appearances, along with a 15.5 BB% and a 23 K% for a 122 wRC+. However, the Jays moved him to third base in 2021 and he struggled with injuries and poor play in his remaining four seasons with the Blue Jays.
Eventually, the Jays cut ties with the beloved utility player, designating him for assignment in early June. They managed to trade Biggio to the Los Angeles Dodgers for relief prospect Braydon Fisher, but Biggio’s time with the Dodgers wasn’t much better.

In 88 plate appearances with the contending team, Biggio slashed .192/.306/.329 with three home runs, along with an 11.4 BB% and a 31.8 K% for a slightly better 86 wRC+ (compared to an 85 wRC+ with Toronto). The 29-year-old was DFA’ed on August 5 and released three days later.
Hopefully, Biggio can earn a spot with the Giants as the rosters expand, as they are four games back of the final Wild Card spot with only one team to jump.
