Former Blue Jays utilityman Cavan Biggio is in familiar waters again this summer, as the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly designating him for assignment with the return of Freddie Freeman to the roster. Freeman has been on the restricted list after taking some time to be with his family after his young son Max was hospitalized with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
A fifth-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016, Biggio was DFA’d by Toronto on June 7th and later traded to the Dodgers in exchange for RHP Braydon Fisher. The corresponding move to Biggio at the time was to promote Spencer Horwitz, who took the 29-year-old’s spot on the roster.
Through six seasons with the Blue Jays, Biggio amassed a .227/.343/.382 slash line with 48 home runs and a .725 OPS. He was never able to fully carve out a full-time role similar to his counterparts Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette and also struggled with injuries that kept him sidelined for parts of the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

On the diamond, Biggio played numerous spots for the Blue Jays – second base, third base, first base, and right field – while spending most of his time on the right side of second.
Following the trade to Los Angeles, Biggio struggled in the batter’s box, authoring a .192/.306/.329 slash line to the tune of a .635 OPS. He walked 10 times compared to 28 strikeouts and collected four extra-base hits and 10 RBIs while playing mostly third base and first base for the Dodgers.
With the trade deadline passed and Biggio having enough service time to refuse a demotion to the minors (hence the DFA most likely), the former Blue Jay can still be dealt or picked up on waivers but would be ineligible for the postseason for whichever team picks him up.
Per Spotrac, Biggio is eligible for a fourth year of arbitration this winter before being free agent eligible following the 2025 season. However, his next move is still to be determined.
