This Graph From FanGraphs’ Front Office Rankings Might Only Be Amusing To Me

Obviously fans who are out there reading FanGraphs are likely to have a different view of the game than those spewing vitriol in Shi Davidi’s mentions, but there was something about the way Jays fans responded to Jeff Sullivan’s recent (and ongoing) project rating each MLB front office that I found rather interesting. Which is to say: I found it hi-fucking-larious.
At least a little bit.
The Blue Jays’ front office, in case you’ve been living under a rock the last two years, is… um… not especially beloved at the moment. Frankly, though I like a whole lot about them and am confident that they’ll ultimately be successful, they haven’t really done anything to make themselves so.
This reality is reflected in the fact that, per Sullivan’s project, the Jays’ front office ranks ahead of just eleven rival front offices: Philadelphia, Seattle, Kansas City, San Diego, Anaheim, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, the Mets, Baltimore, and Miami.
The Jays come out thoroughly average in Jeff’s polling. In fact, if you look at the specific results, you’ll see that 47.93% of Jays fans who answered the survey rated the front office “average.” They were rated “pretty good” by 24% of respondents, “pretty bad” by 20.8%, “very good” by 4.61%, and “very bad” by just 2.66%. These are fans who, by and large, get it.
We need to keep that in mind before we find the next bit too hilarious, but even so, it’s pretty good! From Sullivan’s piece, here’s how the ratings have changed since the last time he performed this exercise, back in July of 2015:
LOL!
I mean, yes, the Jays’ are down since then, but look at the scale on the left — it’s only barely. But one sure as hell can imagine how far they would have fallen had this poll been done just a month later!
It is, I think, a pretty good reminder of what people really thought about the first five years and ten months of the previous regime. Not that, y’know, the people who might actually need that reminder are likely going to find it at FanGraphs… or here, no matter how many times I keep dredging this comparison up.
Just thought it was kinda funny is all.
