Mike Hauschild pitched a gem of a six-inning relief appearance in Seattle, earning him a start in the rotation. He didn’t have as good of a time against the Red Sox, so he was sent packing and prospect Thomas Pannone was recalled in his place.

Pannone missed a good chunk of the 2018 season after being suspended for PED use. He was busted for using the same thing that Chris Colabello apparently used in 2016 and, like Colabello, denied using it. Regardless, Pannone was given an 80-game hammer and finally made his return to action in late June. Through nine starts in three different levels, Pannone owns a 5.36 ERA, though his peripherals (9.5 strikeouts per nine and 2.3 walks per nine) suggest he’s been a bit better than the results indicate.

Many figured Sean Reid-Foley, who’s been excellent between Double- and Triple-A this year, would be the next one in line to get the call, but Pannone is already on the 40-man roster making him an easier addition to the roster. I imagine Reid-Foley will be recalled come September when it’s easier to dump a depth player from the 40-man roster. I mean, if you care about Brian Cumpton or Hauschild’s 40-man spot, I guess?

UPDATE: Per Ben Nicholson-Smith, Pannone will be used out of the ‘pen but could also be an option to start in Hauschild’s scheduled spot on Monday. Also, we could end up seeing SRF earlier than I expected.
