The Toronto Blue Jays are going to have a handful of starting pitching prospects in Triple-A Buffalo next season.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual 40-man roster review ahead of the new season. If you missed the most recent article, we looked at Myles Straw. In this article, we’ll look at Adam Macko.
Drafted in the seventh-round of the 2019 draft out of Vauxhall High School, Macko is a left-handed pitcher who was born in Slovakia, grew up in Ireland, and played high school baseball in Canada. In fact, he’ll represent Canada at the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
Anyway, his first three seasons were filled with injuries, totalling just 95 innings over his first four professional seasons (granted, one of them was the pandemic year). At the conclusion of the 2022 season, he and Erik Swanson were sent to the Blue Jays in exchange for Teoscar Hernández.
Macko spent the entirety of his first season with the Jays with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, where he posted a 4.81 ERA and 3.97 FIP in 86 innings pitched, with a 28.5 K% and 10.8 BB%. Prior to joining the Jays, Macko had struggled with command, so seeing his BB% drop to a career-best sign was encouraging, as was the fact he nearly matched his innings from his first four seasons.
At the end of the season, Macko was Rule 5 eligible, thus the Jays added him to their 40-man roster. The left-handed pitcher’s 2024 wasn’t great, pitching mainly in Double-A where he had a 4.87 ERA and 3.72 FIP in 81.1 innings pitched, with a 26.4 K% and 8.8 BB%. Macko also made three starts in Single-A on a rehab assignment, and appeared in a game with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
That leads us to his 2025 season. Missing the beginning of the season due to knee surgery, Macko totalled 81.1 innings pitched, with five of his 23 appearances coming with the Florida Complex League Jays. With the Bisons, the 25-year-old lefty had a 5.06 ERA and 4.56 FIP in 64 innings pitched, finishing the year with a 22.6 K% and 12.5 BB%.
Macko had a solid end to his season, posting a 3 ERA and 4.57 FIP in his final 11 outings, where he pitched 39 innings. However, he walked 11.9% of the batters he faced during this stretch while ending the season with a 27 K%. Nonetheless, it was a positive sign to end his 2025 season.
One area of strength for the Blue Jays heading in 2026 is the number of starting pitchers at the Triple-A level. Along with Macko, Ricky Tiedemann, Bowden Francis, Lázaro Estrada, and potentially Jake Bloss could make an impact on the Jays roster at some point in 2026.
If Macko does find his way to the big leagues, he’s projected to have a 4.10 ERA and 4.34 FIP according to Steamer. On the other hand ZiPS actually projects his innings total, as that model projects he’ll make 15 starts in 20 appearances with a 4.76 ERA and 4.87 FIP in 75.7 innings pitched.
