Another Toronto Blue Jay will be participating in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
On Tuesday afternoon, the team announced that Alejandro Kirk had been named for Team Mexico in March’s World Baseball Classic.
It’s not the first time Kirk has been named to a World Baseball Classic, having been named to their roster in 2023. However, he withdrew from the tournament due to the birth of his child. This year, it seems like full systems go for him to make his Team Mexico debut in the WBC.
Kirk will obviously start for Mexico, as he’s one of the best catchers in baseball. After breaking onto the scene in 2022, posting a 129 wRC+ while hitting 14 home runs, Kirk hit below average in both 2023 and 2024 while having superb defence. In 2025, the catcher figured it all out.
Over 506 plate appearances, the 27-year-old slashed .282/.348/.421 with 15 home runs, finishing with a 116 wRC+ and a 4.7 fWAR. On the defensive side of things, Kirk had 9 Defensive Runs Saved and 22 Fielding Run Value, the best in the league for any position. Of course, Kirk was robbed of a Gold Glove for the third consecutive season.
Kirk had a strong postseason as well, hitting two home runs in Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series in a win over their hated rivals, the New York Yankees. As a whole, the catcher slashed .254/.349/.493 with five home runs in 83 plate appearances for a 132 wRC+.
This news came on the same day that his teammate, Ernie Clement, was announced to the USA’s roster after he had a terrific postseason. Moreover, there’s a distinct possibility that Kirk will catch former Blue Jay Aaron Sanchez, as he was announced to Mexico’s roster recently. Sanchez’ most recent stint in affiliated ball was in 2024 with the Jays, before winning the Dominican Winter League’s Pitcher of the Year in 2025-26.
Kirk and Clement will face off on Mar. 9, as the two teams are in the same group. That group, Group B, will be hosted in Houston and also features Italy, Great Britain, and Brazil.
