The Glendale Desert Dogs played two games in Arizona Fall League action on Tuesday.
Neither game went particularly well for the Desert Dogs and the Toronto Blue Jays’ prospects participating in the game. Both games were against the Surprise Saguaros, with the Desert Dogs falling 6-3 in the first game and 6-4 in the second game.
Let’s take a look at how the Blue Jays’ prospects performed.

Game 1

There were two Blue Jays prospects involved in their 6-3 loss. Josh Kasevich hit cleanup, and Alex Amalfi started the game.
Kasevich had a productive first plate appearance, hitting into a groundball out, but moving the runner to third, which allowed the Desert Dogs to take a 2-0 lead. In his second plate appearance in the top of the third, he drew a six-pitch walk, and then walked on four pitches in the top of the fifth.
The shortstop’s final plate appearance came in the top of the seventh, hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in the Desert Dogs’ third run of the game. Unfortunately, the run only cut the Saguaros’ lead to three, and the next batter hit into a groundout to end the game.
Amalfi started the game well, striking out three of the first four batters he faced for a scoreless first inning. He ran into some trouble in the second inning, walking a batter, who proceeded to steal second and was cashed in thanks to an RBI single.
In his third and final inning, Amalfi allowed back-to-back singles, with the second cashing in a second run for the Saguaros, thanks to a stolen base. Amalfi got the next two batters to hit into an out, before giving up another single and a walk to load the bases. After he was pulled, the final batter of the inning was retired, giving him two earned runs in two and two-thirds innings pitched.
Diving deeper into the stats, Amalfi didn’t have that bad of a game, as his fastball averaged 93.8 mph and topped out at 94.8. He threw 36 heaters, generating eight whiffs on 18 total swings. Amalfi’s second-most used pitch was his slider, of which he threw 14. It generated one whiff on five total swings. Amalfi also threw three curveballs and three changeups.
As for Kasevich, the groundout in the first inning had an exit velocity of 98.1 mph, considered a hard-hit ball. The sacrifice fly only had an exit velocity of 88.3 mph.

Game 2

Kasevich sat for the second game of the doubleheader, while Cutter Coffey was back in the lineup. Moreover, Kai Peterson was the final pitcher the Desert Dogs used in the 6-4 loss.
Batting eighth, Coffey’s first plate appearance came in the top of the second, a lineout with a runner on first. In the top of the fourth, he struck out swinging on a slider, before walking in his last plate appearance.
Peterson came out for the bottom of the sixth. The left-handed pitcher got Dyaln O’Rae to ground out before walking Joe Lampe on four pitches. It took seven pitches, but Peterson got his second out thanks to a strikeout of Bryan Rincon, then got Blake Mitchell to strikeout on five pitches.
Diving deeper into the stats, 15 of Peterson’s 19 pitches were sinkers, generating two whiffs on five total swings. It averaged about 91.2 mph and maxed out at 92.5 mph. Peterson’s sinker has often been categorized as a changeup by Baseball Savant this AFL season.
Coffey’s lone ball in play was of the hard-hit variety, with his lineout clocking in at 99 mph off the bat.
The Desert Dogs’ next game is on Wednesday at 9:30 PM ET.
