No matter the time of year or the Toronto Blue Jays’ record, anytime the Blue Jays and New York Yankees meet, the stakes always feel higher.
The Blue Jays (33-36) and Yankees (41-26) will meet for their second series of the season beginning on Friday night after the two clubs split a four-game set back at Yankee Stadium running from May 18-21.
In May, the Yankees took the first two games of the series, claiming two one-run victories before the Blue Jays’ pitching staff stymied the powerful Yankees lineup to win 2-1 and 2-0 on back-to-back days.
Heading into the series, the Blue Jays currently trail the Yankees by nine games and could certainly use this weekend to pull themselves a little closer as Major League Baseball’s halfway point of the regular season fast approaches.
With Aaron Judge currently on the injured list due to a right rib stress fracture, the Yankees’ offence has received a jolt from 38-year-old Paul Goldschmidt. The veteran first baseman has been splitting his time between first base and as their designated hitter, catching fire in his 16th MLB season.
Through 42 games, Goldschmidt is batting .287 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs to go along with a .366 on-base percentage.  Since the calendar flipped to June, Goldschmidt has been one of, if not the best Yankee hitter, turning in a .375 average with two home runs and nine RBIs across his 32 at-bats.
On the mound for the Yankees will be left-hander Ryan Weathers. After being acquired by the Yankees from the Miami Marlins on January 13 in exchange for four prospects, Weathers has gotten off to a strong start with the pinstripes.
Over his 12 starts, Weathers is 2-4 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across 70 innings pitched. The 26-year-old has held opposing teams to a .231 average and has punched out 79 batters across his 70 frames.
Last month, the Blue Jays have faced Weathers once this season, back on May 18 at Yankee Stadium, a game that the Yankees won 7-6. The Blue Jays hit Weathers and finished the game with a no-decision. After it was all said and done, Weathers finished with a line of 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. Weathers gave up two home runs, the first a three-run shot off the bat of Ernie Clement, followed by a solo home run hit by George Springer in the fifth.
Starting for the Blue Jays will be right-hander Trey Yesavage. Yesavage was on his way to a dominant outing against the Baltimore Orioles last Friday after allowing only one run through five innings before the wheels fell off in the sixth inning.
The Orioles got to Yesavage for five runs in the sixth inning, ending his evening with a pitching line of 5.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, but he allowed his first two home runs of the season in the Blue Jays’ eventual 13-3 loss.
Over eight starts this season, Yesavage is 2-3 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. While Yesavage hasn’t displayed the elite level of success he flashed during the 2025 postseason, he has still held opposing teams to a .205 average while also punching out 44 batters over his 42.2 innings.
Yesavage will face the Yankees for the second time this year after turning in his best outing of the season to this point against them on May 20. The 22-year-old dazzled over six shutout innings in which he allowed only two hits and struck out eight, dominating the Yankees in a similar fashion he did during his postseason debut against them during last year’s American League Divisional Series when he held the Yankees hitless over 5.1 innings and punched out 11.
