The Toronto Blue Jays are looking for another series win at the Rogers Centre after last night’s comeback victory over the Houston Astros.
Toeing the rubber for the Blue Jays is Jose Berrios, who is looking to rebound after one of his toughest starts of the season.
The Cincinnati Reds torched the right-hander for six runs (and only two earned) and had Berrios out of the game after just two innings. He allowed two walks and struck out just two before the bullpen took over, and although a fielding error from Isiah-Kiner-Falefa accounted for four runs, Berrios was not sharp this outing.
It’s been a tough stretch for the Puerto Rican product, allowing 17 earned runs and seven home runs through his last 33 2/3 innings and seven outings. He’s allowed 39 hits through this span as well, compared to nine walks and 29 strikeouts, and owns a 4.54 ERA and a 5.10 FIP. The Jays have won six of those seven contests, mostly because of the ample run support the club gives their veteran hurler, but Berrios is trending in the wrong direction in an important part of the season. The ideal scenario would be the right-hander giving the Jays a quality start to work with.
Looking to put Houston back in the win column is right-hander Jason Alexander, who makes his 10th start of the year (18th appearance).
Alexander started the year in the Athletics organization before being DFA’d in mid-May, and was picked up by the Astros shortly after. With the Astros struggling to stay healthy in the rotation, Alexander made one relief appearance before moving into a starting role, where he has crafted a 3.34 ERA and a 4.58 FIP in the role. Houston has won seven of his eight starts and has allowed just 17 earned runs through 44 2/3 innings. Across the whole season (Athletics and Astros tenure), he owns a 4.68 ERA through 18 outings.
Alexander works with a sinker and a changeup as his most used pitches before finishing things off with a sweeper, four-seamer, and the occasional cutter. Despite the stellar ERA since joining Houston, Alexander owns a negative pitching run value on all his pitches. He sits in the low 90s with his fastball and sinker, while the changeup and sweeper sit 10 MPH lower.
