The Toronto Blue Jays were riding a season-high five-game winning streak coming into Tuesday’s game.
It took essentially one inning for that streak to come to an end, as the Philadelphia Phillies scored six runs before the Blue Jays even had a chance to bat. In the end, they lost 8-3 to move to two games above .500.
That said, there were some positives to take away from that game. Davis Schneider hit his first home run of the season, a much-needed hit for the 26-year-old. Moreover, Addison Barger hit a home run in his fourth consecutive game, as he’s starting to look like a legitimate power bat the Jays can lean on. Another positive is that Andres Gimenez returned to the lineup for the first time since early May.
On Wednesday, Alan Roden will make his first start in a month after being optioned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. After the demotion, he slashed .361/.446/.583 with three home runs in 83 plate appearances for a 178 wRC+. There’s not much else to prove for the 25-year-old outfielder in the minor leagues, he just needs reps in the big leagues at this point.
Wednesday’s game isn’t the best Blue Jays’ lineup by any means. As has been the case for most of the season, Bo Bichette bats lead-off and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bats second. Barger moves up to third in the lineup, while Alejandro Kirk and George Springer follow him. Their outfield is comprised of Nathan Lukes in right field, Roden in left field, and Jonatan Clase in centre field. They bat sixth, seventh, and eighth in the lineup. Gimenez is batting ninth once again.
Bowden Francis’ struggles continued on Tuesday, as he hasn’t picked up a win in his last eight starts. Wednesday’s starter is rolling, though, as Jose Berrios has a 3.05 ERA and a 3.65 FIP in his last seven starts (41.1 innings pitched). On the other side, Mick Abel makes his second career big league start.
Let’s set up Wednesday’s game as the Blue Jays look to avoid the series loss.
