As expected, infielder Andrés Giménez and catcher Tyler Heineman have been activated from the injured list prior to Tuesday’s series opener versus the Philadelphia Phillies.
The moves were officially announced by the Toronto Blue Jays, with the team reinstating both Giménez and Heineman from the 10-day IL.
In corresponding moves, infielder Michael Stefanic and catcher Ali Sánchez were designated for assignment by the club, creating space on the 26-man roster while opening two spots on the 40-man. Both players were out of minor-league options and couldn’t be sent to triple-A without first passing through waivers.
Giménez (quad strain) last played in the majors on May 7 versus the Los Angeles Angels, injuring himself while running out a bunt single. In 36 games this season, he’s hit .195/.273/.305 with three home runs and 10 RBIs, accounting for a 67 wRC+ (100 league average). He’s been successful in nine of his 10 stolen base attempts thus far.
The 26-year-old participated in a single-A rehab assignment with Dunedin, going 2-for-12 (.167) with a double, three RBIs (one via a sac-fly), two walks and a strikeout over four contests. He played his final rehab game on Sunday before returning to Toronto.
Toronto acquired Giménez — signed to a seven-year, $106.5-million contract that runs through 2029 and includes a club option for ’30 — and reliever Nick Sandlin (who began a rehab assignment in the FCL on Tuesday) in a trade from the Cleveland Guardians over the off-season, sending first baseman Spencer Horwitz and outfield prospect Nick Mitchell in return.
Heineman landed on the seven-day concussion IL after taking multiple foul balls off the mask in a game on May 22 versus the San Diego Padres. The Blue Jays’ backup catcher felt fine initially, but he was ultimately ruled out after reporting symptoms a few days later.
It’s been an impressive start to the season for Heineman, albeit over a limited sample size in a reserve role. Still, the switch-hitting backstop has slashed .396/.412/.542 with five extra-base hits — including one home run — and six RBIs in 19 games, spanning 51 plate appearances worth 1.1 fWAR.
The Blue Jays will conclude their current homestand with a three-game series versus the Phillies, beginning with Tuesday’s opener that’ll feature a pitching matchup between Bowden Francis and Cristopher Sánchez.
