The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to add another sweep to their record this afternoon against the Diamondbacks. Toronto came from behind to win in the ninth inning on Tuesday and put up eight runs yesterday against the D’backs and their pitching staff.
Heading to the mound for the Blue Jays is Kevin Gausman, who is making his 15th start of the season. The right-hander owns a 1.07 WHIP and has held opponents to a .651 OPS this season, but has struggled with consistency at times. He’s allowed ten earned runs through his last 15 2/3 innings through June and owns a 5.74 ERA across those three outings. In May. Gausman found better results, authoring a 2.81 ERA through five starts where he allowed just ten runs, six of which came through his start against the Rays on May 15th.
Gausman’s command has been on point this year again, authoring a 2.3 BB/9 so far this year, and he’s also added 80 strikeouts to the tune of an 8.8 K/9. For his career, Guasman has handled the Diamondbacks, posting a 2.22 ERA through nine outings (eight starts) while posting a 1.068 WHIP across 48 2/3 innings.
Opposite Guasman for the Diamondbacks will be right-hander Ryne Nelson.
Nelson gets the nod today for Arizona, with the 27-year-old making his sixth start of the season. The Nevada product has been flipping between the rotation and bullpen for the Diamondbacks this season, given the injuries, and works in long relief as required. His longest start this season was back on May 26th against the Pirates, where he went 6 2/3 innings and allowed zero earned runs. The starter has struggled to find consistency as well, with a couple of solid starts against the Pirates, Dodgers, and Padres on his resume, but he struggled mightily against the Cincinnati Reds on June 7th, allowing seven earned runs through three innings while also walking four batters.
Working with a five-pitch mix, Nelson’s fastball is his calling card – a pitch he uses 59.2% of the time. Sitting in the mid to upper 90s, the four-seamer has over 11 inches of vertical drop and ranks as a +8 pitch, and while it hasn’t produced a ton of swing and miss, opponents are hitting just .208 on the offering and he uses his cutter, slider, and curveball to keep hitters off balance and add some whiffs to his game. Expect the Jays’ bats to wait for that fastball.
Lineup-wise, manager John Schneider continues to use the top three of Bo Bichette, Addison Barger, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which makes sense given the recent success with those three in the order. Jonatan Clase returns to the lineup and will play centre field – he was removed from the game on Wednesday after taking a fastball to the knee. Alejandro Kirk will be behind the plate, and Alan Roden will take over in left field while George Springer slots in as the DH with Barger in RF.
Gabriel Moreno lands on the IL for the Dbacks – he hasn’t appeared in a game for Arizona since they arrived in Toronto. Corbin Carroll is also out of today’s lineup after taking a pitch to his hand late in last night’s game.
